Fromson takes the time to get inside the brain of Hamilton Meadows, a slightly troubled, PTSD stricken veteran, who has his heart set on recreating an authentic Shakespeare anthology with all lines spoken in original pronunciation or "OP." The only problem is, Meadows doesn't have any way to accomplish this monumental feat. He has the vision and passion, but lacks real world experience, personal skills, financial support, and a real job. More than that, Meadows lacks realism. He lives in a romantic, fantasy world that drives his colleagues to near insanity. Meadows would say, though, that his immense failures were all worth the effort because someone like Fromson took the time to memorialize him. Meadows' legacy could have remained as just a 1-star play review in a local arts newspaper. Instead, we get to explore the emotional, chaotic mentality of a man who is, if anything, driven. I wouldn't assume that every piece of writing about the pronunciation of Shakespearean plays is very interesting, but this one I couldn't put down. Fromson has found the most interesting possible subject in Hamilton Meadows. Meadows walks the fine line between eccentric and mentally ill, and the author does an excellent job of highlighting the absurdity of his quest without mocking the life that led him to this point. It's also fascinating and amusing to read of the interactions between such a single-minded, unconventional Shakespeare fan and a refined, renowned British Shakespeare scholar -- an engaging story of literature leading to unexpected alliances, including the relationship between Meadows and Fromson himself. This is worth a lot more than $1.99.
A truly well written longform nonfiction narrative that has something for everyone. Whether you're interested in the history of Elizabethan english, the origins of Original Pronunciation (OP), or just curious about what would drive an inexperienced Vietnam vet to put on one of the first OP Shakespeare plays in the United States, you'll find this piece fascinating. The author has a way of pulling you into the piece and making you feel as if you were there for every shaky moment and potentially questionable outcome. The history presented is well-researched, but the true strength is an engrossing narrative about an unlikely protagonist attempting to succeed against difficult circumstances.
This is the story of someone whose life is always in the process of disintegrating--has been for decades--but who somehow keeps progressing through an incredible array of places and careers and breakdowns and adventures. Mr. Meadow's quest for Shakespeare's true English, and the weird club of people who are likewise obsessed with recreating that long-dead accent, are just the latest parts of a long and bizarre story. I'll let you find out the details for yourself, but suffice it to say he manages to prove that you can live a thousand lives in one, if you just keep your rickety yacht/desert truck/stolen car moving.
Very well-reported, but ultimately I didn't quite connect with Hamilton Meadows as much as other people seemed to. Was hoping for much more about Elizabeth English, OP, and Shakespeare in general, and less about one compelling oddball. And frankly his production of Twelfth Night OP sounds like it was pretty terrible. Too much detail about not enough story, but commendable craft on the author's part in capturing his main character.
This book was recommended by through a Facebook ad. The book starts off interstingly, but then changes and gets dull and depressing. The author writes well and with the same economy as Kurt Vonnegut, but he does not write nearly as well as Vonnegut to justify his moving the story around so much. One of the problems with Singles is the complete lack of editing(ie, objective authority), so the writers tend to ramble and no one tells then to make it better. Well, Mr. Fromson, make it better.
I finished Finding Shakespeare on my flight yesterday. Book is well swell.
I thought Fromson invented this incredible character - then I realized he's non-fictional.
